As fashion progresses, we see many local designers experimenting with traditional outfits to bring a fresh new spin to what would be considered predictable clothes. However, many have argued that “modernising” traditional clothing goes against preserving the culture and values the clothing brings.

Local designer Arma Rahman recently unveiled the upcoming Raya collection for his Arma Couture label at the Arma Couture @ The Avenoir Luxe Raya Fashion Show. The collection features over 30 new designs for both men and women, with most of the pieces being innovative redesigns of the traditional Malay garments, Baju Melayu and Baju Kurung.

However, the most shocking item from the collection was the men’s Baju Melayu, which was slightly translucent. The chiffon material used for the garment created a see-through look which showed the male models’ bodies. Unsurprisingly, the design was not well-received by netizens, who criticised the designer for turning a traditional garment into a somewhat obscene look.

In an interview with local media, Arma responded to the criticism about his latest design and denied the claims that he turned traditional clothing into something indecent. He also denied that his designs disrespect Malay culture and values, adding that the model wore the Baju Melayu with a traditional sampin. The designer said he always stresses the importance of maintaining a balance between innovation and respect towards culture as it adds to the uniqueness and beauty of traditional Malay garments.

Arma also clarified that while the chiffon material is slightly translucent, the Baju Melayu top appeared more see-through due to the harsh lighting at the fashion show. He added that wearers can wear the top with an undershirt or a singlet to appear more modest. However, the designer argued that the material is perfect for the country’s hot weather.
