If you’re planning on heading to IKEA Cheras for a meal at their Swedish Restaurant, you’ll have to reconsider. The Swedish furniture giant recently announced that their in-house restaurant is temporarily closed until further notice to facilitate maintenance work.

On 17th June 2026 (Wednesday), IKEA Malaysia released a statement on social media regarding the status of their Cheras outlet’s Swedish Restaurant. Earlier that same day, customers noticed that the eatery had closed down, with a closure order notice from the Jabatan Kesihatan Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur dan Putrajaya under Section 11 of the Malaysian Food Act 1983.

In its statement, IKEA Malaysia confirmed the closure, writing, “Our IKEA Cheras Swedish Restaurant is temporarily closed from today (17 June 2026) while we carry out maintenance works to ensure we continue meeting the high hygiene standards expected by both IKEA and Malaysian health authorities.” The company also apologised for the inconvenience caused by the sudden change in operations.

IKEA Malaysia continued the statement, clarifying that only the Swedish Restaurant is temporarily closed. The IKEA Café and Bistro at IKEA Cheras remain open. The closure also doesn’t affect the company’s Damansara, Tebrau and Batu Kawan outlets. It’s unclear when the Swedish Restaurant will be back in business. However, reports say the eatery will remain shut for two weeks, until 1st July 2026 (Wednesday).

Netizens have reacted to the closure, but some regular customers said they weren’t surprised by the news. Many lamented that the Swedish Restaurant at the Cheras outlet has had cleanliness issues for some time, pointing out that the dishes and cutlery still have stains from previous diners despite being washed. A few netizens even claimed to have gotten food poisoning after dining at the restaurant, highlighting a serious issue with the eatery.

The closure also comes just as IKEA was set to hold their Midsummer Dinner Buffet, initially scheduled for 18th and 19th June 2026 (Thursday and Friday). While the buffet won’t continue at the Cheras outlet, customers can still enjoy the buffet event at the Damansara, Tebrau and Batu Kawan outlets. Customers who have already purchased tickets can contact IKEA Malaysia for more details.

Despite the disappointing news, customers expressed support for IKEA Cheras, hoping that the Swedish Restaurant will be back in business soon.
