Icon Brewings: It’s More Than Just A Dessert Haven For Pastry Aficionados

The genesis of how Icon Brewings came to be is an impressive story – to say the least. What started as an interior design showroom for contemporary designs and a gathering venue for artists and designers, was later transformed into cozy cafe that specialise in strudels. Yes, we’re talking about the Instagrammable strudels that went viral in recent years.

Owner Nicolas Lim was able to turn his passion for food into a thriving F&B business. When the lockdown first hit us in 2020, almost every business suffered. Since the majority were staying and cooking at home, Nicolas decided to put more emphasis on pastries and desserts – a craft he has been honing and perfecting over the past 3 years. His foresight paid off and his strudels put Icon Brewings on everyone’s radar.

Located near Cheras Leisure Mall, Icon Brewings is the perfect place for cafe hoppers and local foodies to drop by for a lovely afternoon tea to enjoy the selection of strudels (range between RM17 – RM24) while enjoying a warm cuppa coffee (or tea). The iconic original strudels feature a vibrant mix of tropical fruity flavours such as Mango, Grapes, Kiwi, Strawberry, Apple, Peach and Blueberry.

As any returning customer/ fan would tell you, the strudels at Icon Brewings are consistently fresh, crusty, and has a satisfying crunch when you bite into its crispy layers. The juicy fruits and the layer of cream compliment each other well. Each strudel is thick enough and we like that the cream isn’t overly sweet. Oftentimes, crunchy desserts tend to fall apart when you cut into it. Thankfully, our strudels were still intact.

In addition to the refreshing fruit strudels, we had the pleasure of tasting Malaysia’s favourite tea-inspired flavours such as Lychee Rose Strudel, Earl Grey Strudel, Mango Matcha Strudel, Banana Pistachio and even a Banana Thai-Milk tea strudel. Their Crossover Strudel set also had unique flavours like Chocolate Oreo and Biscoff Latte. Seeing as how Icon Brewings changes its seasonal menu every 3-4 months, the aforementioned limited time flavours will soon make way for the festive Chinese New Year Strudel series.

Besides the mouth-watering desserts, Icon Brewings also caters to all day dining with a delectable menu of western and Asian cuisines. Those visiting in the morning for breakfast or brunch would often opt for King Breakfast (RM38) – consisting of jumbo sausage, chicken nuggets, hash-brown, chicken ham, baked beans, scrambled eggs, sourdough and side salad. It’s a perfect meal to be shared with a friend or loved one.

Since we wanted to try more varieties, we had the Grilled Chicken Sourdough (RM23) and Hummus Chicken (RM27). Both dishes came with grilled chicken that were cooked to perfection. While the Grilled Chicken Sourdough was elevated when mixed with the creamy mushroom dip sauce and raclette cheese, the Hummus Chicken was equally tantalising when taken with the sourdough and hummus.

If you’re craving for pasta, this eatery serve 5 options. Those who enjoy Korean food will probably gravitate towards Korean Spicy Shrimp Pasta (RM26). The Korean spicy sauce delivers a satisfying kick to the taste buds. Despite being someone who can’t take spicy food, this dish wasn’t too overwhelming. Having said that, we were absolutely blown away by the Spring Onions Garlic Prawn Pasta (RM26). The chewy-yet-tender texture of the noodles cooked with Oyster sauce, spring onions and ginger made it a sensational combo!
