What if your parents liked to play dead for the sake of art?

Directed by and starring Jason Bateman, “The Family Fang” is based on a 2011 novel of the same name by Kevin Wilson. The movie made its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) last September.

Annie (played by Nicole Kidman) and Baxter Fang (played by Jason Bateman) are a pair of troubled siblings who are scarred from an unconventional upbringing. After an unlikely incident, they return to their family home to see their parents, Caleb (played by Christopher Walken) and Camille Fang (played by Maryann Plunkett), who are performance artists famous for elaborate public hoaxes in the 1970s.

The official synopsis reads:

When their parents suddenly go missing under troubling circumstances, Baxter and Annie investigate what looks very much like a crime scene though they both are equally convinced that it’s just another performance by their parents. Unsure whether it’s foul play or just another elaborate ruse, nothing can prepare them for what they discover.

“The Family Fang” received many positive reviews after its premiere in the TIFF. Justin Chang from VARIETY described the movie as “a sharply drawn portrait of a dysfunctional family”, while John Fink from The Film Stage said, “one of the richest and most eccentric films about a family since ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’.”

This movie also marks Jason Bateman’s 2nd attempt as director.
