Are y’all ready to meet Pete and his giant green monster, um, dragon?
In order to whet your appetite, Disney has just released a brand new movie poster and a new trailer for “Pete’s Dragon”. Although the poster tease failed to reveal the full-frontal of the mythical creature (we presume they’re holding it back for dramatic reveal for a later date), we’ll just have to make do with its big fuzzy tail.
Based on the 1977 animated version, the official synopsis for “Pete’s Dragon” is as follows:
“For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley).
Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.”
Although the standard dragon creature from the 1977 original cartoon featured Elliot in green scales, pink hair, and spikes, the redesigned beast in the upcoming remake is covered in green fur! That was actually an intentional choice, according to director David Lowery.
“When I went to pitch the movie to Disney, I said ‘I want him to be a furry dragon’. Pete is supposed to be cuddling up with the dragon, so let’s make him furry. I wanted him to feel not like a “Game Of Thrones” or “Harry Potter” dragon,” said Lowery.
Based on the story by Seton I, Elliot’s overall design basically “has the wings of an Australian flying fox, polar bear fur, and his roar is a finely tuned mix of lion, tiger, and elephant”. But more than anything, Lowery adds that Elliot is largely inspired by his own pet cat.

“Pete’s Dragon” will be released in Malaysian theatres on 1st September 2016.
