Think you know everything about “X-Men”? “The New Mutants” is unlike anything we’ve seen from the “X-Men” franchise so far.
The upcoming “X-Men” spin-off is said to be more of a horror flick rather than a “traditional” comic book film. Judging from the newly-released teaser trailer, “The New Mutants” appears to be venturing into the psychological and physiological terrors that haunt 5 young mutants.
“We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the ‘X-Men’ universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different,” director Josh Boone previously told Entertainment Weekly. Just like “Logan” before it, “The New Mutants” is shaping up to be the next dark horror/YA version of the “X-Men” franchise.
The younger generation of gifted students here include Anya-Taylor Joy (“The Witch”) as Magik, Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones”) as Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton (“Stranger Things”) as Cannonball, Henry Zaga (“13 Reasons Why”) as Sunspot, and Blu Hunt (“The Originals”) as Mirage.
Unlike the Marvel original comics, it doesn’t seem like these young mutants are at Charles Xavier’s school. Instead, the teenagers seem to be confined in an eerie asylum where they’re kept in cells and observed for study. As Dr. Cecilia Reyes (played by Alice Braga) explains, baby rattlesnakes are more deadly than the adults because they have no control over their venom yet. Likewise, the mutants are seemingly trapped because they’re dangerous.
Although “The New Mutants” is intended to be a horror movie, we still hope that it’ll maintain superhero-ey feel. It is a “X-Men” movie after all.
