Hype’s Must Watch: Mother!

Jennifer Lawrence looks terrifyingly beautiful in the first teaser trailer for “Black Swan” director Darren Aronofky’s “Mother!” (stylised as “mother!”).

The upcoming psychological thriller is selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 74th Venice International Film Festival. It also stars award-winning Spanish actor Javier Bardem, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Harris, Domhnall Gleeson, and comedian Kristen Wiig.

“Mother!” centres on a couple (played by Jennifer Lawrence and Jaview Bardem), whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence. The trailer (above) shows Lawrence’s character walking silently through an empty house. Although the clip doesn’t show much, it’s pretty disturbing to watch.

“What brings you to us,” Lawrence’s voice asks.

“They told me I could find a room here,” Ed Harris’ voice responds. “He thought we were a bed and breakfast,” Javier Bardem wittily says.

During the Reykjavík Film Festival, Aronofky said, “I think all my early films were more about ideas. When it came to ‘Noah,’ there was this clear environmental statement in the original gospel, which was interesting to push forward. My latest project (“Mother!”) probably has similar political intentions behind it, but first and foremost responsibility as a narrative filmmaker is making something that is emotional and can connect with an audience.”

Moreover, cinematographer Matthew Libatique shot most of the film on 16mm film. Digital cameras were only used on the final day of shooting so that the movie could support CGI-heavy visuals.

“Mother!” is slated for release on 15th September 2017.
