Japanese rock and visual-kei band Screw was founded in 2006. Consisting of five members – lead vocalist Byo, leader, lead guitarist and backing vocalist Kazuki, rhythm guitarist Manabu, bassist Rui and drummer and percussionist Jin, Screw is known for their bold visuals and music styles since their debut in 2006. Throughout their musical career, the band has produced songs ranging from rock and heavy metal to dance, pop and ballads.

Screw released their fifth studio album Biran in 2012 which instantly spotted the #3 spot on the Indies chart and the band’s domestic tour this year titled Screw 7th Anniversary Never-Ending Breath started its run in Osaka and ended at Shibuya-AX.

This November, Screw will be joining other popular acts like D=Out at the Sundown Festival in Singapore. Hype.My caught up with the boys in an exclusive interview.

How long has Screw been performing together?

We’ve been performing together as rock band for seven years now. Seven wonderful, fun and long years. It’s been such an insanely good journey that seven years has just flew by us without us even realising.

What does Screw think about when music comes to mind?

Thoughts and emotions at that particular time. We write lyrics and make music so we usually translate and instil our own feelings to the lyrics so that the world can see what Screw is feeling through our deliverance.

What is the best event Screw has ever played at?

Oh this is a good question! It has to be on April 7th, 2012 at Akasaka Blitz. We always deliver each live performance with all our energy but Akasaka Blitz was different. It was different because for some reason Akasaka Blitz live was one of the best live shows we have ever done that got us to bond with our fans. The tighter and stronger bond formed was so incredible that we want to have our 8th Anniversary Live Never-Ending Breath tour again at Akasaka Blitz on April 20th, 2013.

Out of Screw’s five albums, which one is Screw most proud of?

We would say that it is our self titled album. We released the album Screw in July 2013 and it has become one which truly shows Screw’s current direction. Also there are a lot things that we are trying our upcoming album Calvacade which was just recently released – November 6th, 2013 so check it out!
