Hugh Jackman has an important advice for all you peeps out there: Wear sunscreen!
The 48-year-old Oscar nominated actor took to his social media earlier this morning (Tuesday, 14th February) to share a bandaged post-operation selfie of himself after being treated for skin cancer on his nose again.
“Another basal cell carcinoma. Thanks to frequent checks & amazing doctors, all’s well. Looks worse w the dressing on then off! WEARSUNSCREEN (sic).” Jackman captioned the photo above. According to various sources, the Aussie star has suffered skin cancer at least 5 times over the past 4 years.
The “Wolverine” actor, who now gets his skin checked every 3 months, said, “It’s always a bit of a shock just hearing the word ‘cancer’. Being an Australian, (skin cancer) is a very common thing. I never wore sunscreen growing up so I was a prime candidate for it. I was trying to keep calm about it… basal cell carcinoma is just something you have to deal with. It’s cancerous. It will grow. You just have to get it out.”
Jackman first discovered that he had cancerous cells in November 2013 when his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, encouraged him to get a mole on his nose checked, which turned out to be cancerous. “Deb said to get the mark on my nose checked. Boy, was she right! I had a basal cell carcinoma. Please don’t be foolish like me. Get yourself checked. And USE sunscreen!” he previously shared.
Basal cell carcinoma is one of the most common form of cancer. It is not usually life-threatening but it can cause disfigurement or destruction to the skin and surrounding tissues. According to the Cancer Society, non-melanoma skin cancer is more common in men.
Thank goodness, Jackson is doing fine now. We’re grateful to the actor for raising awareness on the subject.
