As much as most don’t like school, it does teach some good things. Like reading and comprehension. And according to netizens, this netizen from China certainly needed it when they read this sign about durians.

Recently, a netizen who had been staying at a hotel in Thailand got offended when they read a sign declaring a fine for bringing durians to the hotel. They claimed it was discriminating against the Chinese as it supposedly charged a ‘higher fine’ compared to others. However, netizens were quick to claim otherwise.

The video, titled “Blatant Discrimination” was uploaded to 小红书 on 25th June. The short clip showed a fairly common sign at the hotel’s reception counter declaring that durians were not allowed. If caught, they would be fined $1000 or RMB 6,700.

However, it seems the netizen misunderstood the sign and thought the hotel was fining the Chinese more than others. As they complained in their caption: “(One would be) fined RMB 6,700, and people from other countries are only fined 1000.” Needless to say, netizens were quick to correct them.

“Do your homework first,” one reprimanded, pointing out that the $1000 fine was in US dollars. Another even stated that according to the exchange rate, paying 6700 RMB was “not bad” as it was $100 less than the $1000 fine. “(They are) really good to the Chinese,” they added. A netizen also asked if they misunderstood the meaning of “discrimination”. Others however suggested the netizen had simply tried to stir up trouble with their controversial post.

Well, as it is the durian season, it’s common to see most hotels warning their guests against bringing durians into the hotel, with an added fine as a deterrent. But, we highly doubt this hotel was attempting to discriminate against its guests. Hopefully, the netizen understands the sign better now!
