A day after rumours of her passing, Hong Kong actress Kathy Chow (周海媚) was confirmed to have passed away on 11th December. However, that was not all that was shared. Allegedly, the late actress also had her medical records leaked!
The much loved 57-year-old actress’s passing had come as a shock, especially after the earlier confusion regarding her passing. As such, the leak of Kathy Chow’s medical records caused great outcry. But, authorities were quick to act and the perpetrator has since been caught.
Kathy’s studio confirmed her passing on 12th December. However, while many were still reeling from the shock, her electronic medical records were unfortunately leaked to the public via Weibo. The medical records displayed her personal information, past medical history, and details about her treatment. Hospital staff later allegedly confirmed the leak and that the records were genuine.
Luckily, police have reportedly since managed to arrest the person responsible, a 36-year-old man surnamed Fu. The suspect supposedly worked at a hospital in the Shunyi District and had taken advantage of his job to snap a photo of Kathy’s personal medical record. Fu had then sent it to a WeChat group to show off, however, it was later spread to Weibo.
Aside from Fu, sources claim his friends were also involved in the leak and have since been detained. Hospital personnel added that they are currently carrying out an internal investigation to understand how the case was leaked, and will allegedly be handling the issue based on results of the pending police investigation. For now however, the staff involved has been suspended.
According to a lawyer, Fu supposedly could face civil compensation, and tort compensation, claimed by Kathy Chow’s family. There’s also a chance he could face three to seven years of imprisonment for criminal responsibility, depending the severity of the charge.
