#HOKL: Ain Farhana’s Inspiring Story About Career Choices Goes Viral

“Opportunities don’t happen, you create them.” – Chris Grosser.

Ain Farhana, who is a young technical assistant for RapidKL, recently shared her story about career choices to Humans of Kuala Lumpur, a Facebook page dedicated to share photographs and stories of those who live in the capital city. As at time of writing, her story has been shared over 12,400 times.

Before she was a technical assistant for RadidKL, Farhana, who holds a diploma in Geomatics in Science (Geographical Information System) from UiTM (Universiti Teknologi MARA) in Seri Iskandar, Perak, worked as a cleaner for the transportation company after her graduation, earning about RM900 a month.

She eventually got a job offer from a company in Damansara as a technical assistant but after working there for a month, she decided to quit the job because it didn’t provide her with any learning opportunities. Although the boss, who wanted her to stay because her birth date matched the Feng Shui of the company, offered to get her a car and any amount of salary she could ask for, she was determined to leave.

She said:

“Thing is, there was no mentor for me to learn about the job from. And you will not be ikhlas (sincere) when you do your job if you’re unhappy with the working conditions and demands. So I turned the job down and continued being a cleaner at RapidKL again.”

One day, her mother, who also works as a cleaner for RapidKL, told her that the management wants to offer her a different job. “I went for the interview, and I am lucky and extremely grateful to be a technical assistant, here today,” she said.

This goes to show that no job is too small. In the wise words of Farhana, “Apart from God’s grace, it really falls back onto effort and the willingness to learn. You have to get out of your comfort zone and search. You have to adapt to new situations, environment and people”.

In the comments box, many Facebook users praised the young Malaysian for her dedication and positivity and shared their own success stories as well.
