After a 16-day trial, film producer and actor Raymond Wong Pak-ming (黃百鳴) has been convicted of insider trading. Unfortunately for him, the conviction means the 80-year-old is now facing possible jail time.
On 22nd May 2026 (Friday), the Eastern Magistrates’ Court in Hong Kong convicted the producer of insider trading in Pegasus Entertainment shares. The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) brought the criminal prosecution, and the conviction came following a 16-day trial. Raymond was found guilty of sharing insider information with his sister, Jenny Wong, netting her more than HK$1 million (approximately RM505,000) in profit.

According to reports, Raymond became aware of price-sensitive and non-public information in 2017 while negotiating the sale of his stake in Pegasus Entertainment. The producer co-founded the entertainment company in 2009 with his son Edmond. Raymond reportedly instigated Jenny to buy shares in the company, sending her multiple WhatsApp messages and advising her on when and how much to purchase Pegasus shares.
During the trial, Raymond reportedly made “absurd and illogical” explanations regarding the WhatsApp messages. He argued that the messages were merely a unique communication style between him and his sister, claiming that he meant the exact opposite of what he sent. The court has adjourned the case until 9th June 2026 (Tuesday) for sentencing, with Raymond currently released on bail.

It’s unclear whether the public figure will face jail time for his conviction. However, Raymond’s peers have reportedly sent letters of mitigation, hoping for a lenient sentence. Among those who wrote letters are TVB Assistant General Manager Virginia Lok (乐易玲) and director David Lam (林德禄). The letters also noted Raymond’s contribution to Hong Kong’s film and television industry and his philanthropy.
The defence also argued that Raymond has no prior criminal record and is retired. Therefore, the team requested consideration for a non-custodial sentence. For now, we can only wait to find out what his sentence will be, but what are your thoughts on this?
