“Hi Very Pondan”: Netizens Amused By Rapid KL Admin’s Direct Response To Bus Rider

If you’re a public transportation user, you’ve probably checked out Rapid KL’s social media accounts to get updates on train frequencies and downtimes. You may also notice that the admins for the company’s accounts often respond to enquiries from riders, leading to some entertaining interactions.

Recently, Twitter user @/izzanqistan reached out to the Rapid KL social media account to complain about a rude bus driver they encountered during their commute. According to the user, the bus driver had called an Indian woman a derogatory slur during the bus ride and failed to provide their staff information on the vehicle for riders’ identification. Rapid KL then replied to the tweet to apologise for the issue and take action against the bus driver.

However, in their tweet responding to the bus rider, the Rapid KL admin named Aaron had directly copied the user’s display name, which was “Very Demure, very Pondan (transgender woman)”. Funnily enough, the admin had replicated the name to the tee, including the cursive font, which hints that the admin had copied and pasted the display name without much thought. Unsurprisingly, the tweet quickly went viral, with many Malaysians amused by how the admin addressed the user.

Many cracked up at how bluntly Aaron addressed the user, even if it was by copying and pasting their display name. Some netizens also brought up another “infamous” Rapid KL admin, Melati, who unfortunately addressed other users with vulgar Malay words simply because it was their display name at the time of response. It’s worth noting that most found the incident funny instead of rude, and even the original poster said they didn’t mind the name.

Of course, we can’t blame the poor Rapid KL admins for addressing users with their display names, as they likely have no other way of identifying the user without misgendering or mislabeling. However, this incident could remind Twitter users to pick a safer display name before tweeting a corporate account.
