“Hamburger Straw” Is The Newest Food Trend In Japan

There are tons of weird food trends happening around the world and sometimes, people do it for no reasons at all.

Recently, a new food trend in Japan has taken the Internet by storm and it involves placing a McDonald’s hamburger on top of their sodas and sticking a straw through it.

And no, we’re not joking.

According to Kotaku, this trend (or online meme) is called “drink x hamburger” (ハンバーガーxドリンク) or “hamburger straw” (ハンバーガー ストロー). While the trend has yet to spread worldwide, the media outlet noted that it has been covered by 2ch, Japan’s biggest online bulletin board, and other popular Japanese blogs.

Some netizens expressed that the trend looks cool but others commented that it’s “dirty” and gross. Although we don’t know why Japanese netizens are doing this, the combination is oddly satisfying to look at.

Aside from hamburgers and soft drinks, some Twitter users are also placing donuts on top of their beverages.
