The Malaysia Institute of International Islamic Cooperation (Ikiam) will be launching a new halal logo to differentiate between non-Muslim and Muslim-made products early next year, reported The Malay Mail Online.

The effort will be done in collaboration with the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda), and chairman Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin said that the launching of the new logo will be witnessed by representatives from various Islamic organisations within and outside the country.

“The need for another halal logo is to distinguish products that were produced by Muslims against that of non-Muslims besides helping Risda smallholding entrepreneurs and Muslim entrepreneurs make forays into the halal markets locally and abroad,” explained Zahidi. The new logo will only be pasted on Muslim-made products.

He is also confident that the new logo, which would go hand-in-hand with the current halal logo issued by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim), will increase the confidence of the public’s veracity over halal products. This is because several companies were revealed to have violated halal regulations after obtaining the certification from Jakim.

In May, the halal logo courted controversy as a picture of chicken eggs stamped with the “halal” logo gained traction online and went viral. It raised the issue of whether it was necessary for individual eggs to be certified halal.

However, Jakim cleared any doubts regarding the issue by stating that such labels only need to be stamped on the packaging of the products, and by placing the logo on individual eggs, the individuals or companies involved are actually flouting regulations.
