It’s a sad day for the music industry. Earlier today (Wednesday, 15th October), it was reported that award-winning R&B singer D’Angelo had passed away at the age of 51 following a long battle with pancreatic cancer. In an official statement, the star’s family wrote, “We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind.”
D’Angelo, whose real name was Michael Eugene Archer, made a lasting impact on the music industry as a pioneer of neo-soul, a genre that blends R&B with elements of hip-hop and jazz. Throughout his career, he won a total of four Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Album for “Voodoo” and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for “Untitled (How Does It Feel)”.

D’Angelo’s music career began at the age of 18, when he joined an R&B group that won the famed Amateur Night competition at New York’s Apollo Theatre for three consecutive weeks, according to the official Grammy website. He quickly made waves in 1995 with the release of his debut album “Brown Sugar”, and has since become one of the most influential figures in music, particularly within the R&B genre.
In 2024, it was reported that the artist was working on his 4th album, which would also mark his 3rd solo release since “Voodoo” in 2000. At the time of writing, there has been no update on the project’s progress, though reports suggest it could be released posthumously. According to People magazine, a source revealed that the singer had been in the hospital for months and spent his final days cared for by his loved ones.
The news of his death came as a shock to fans, including his peers, who have paid tribute to him on social media. Here are some of their heartfelt messages to the late singer:
