Over the years, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic, several places have been left abandoned. Although it is not entirely impossible, it would still cost a fortune to get them operational again. While these shopping centres, hotels, resorts, and theme parks were left to decay, some thrill-seekers and paranormal enthusiasts have visited them for fun and even update Malaysians on their current state.

In this list, we’ll focus on the theme parks and water parks that were permanently shut down in recent years. Read on to see what these attractions look like now, after years of inactivity.

1. Movie Animation Park Studio of Perak (MAPS Perak)

MAPS Perak opened first opened its doors to visitors in 2017. Unfortunately, it only operated for 3 years. Just like other businesses, the closure was only meant to be temporary but sadly it still remained abandoned with no signs of development. Who knows, perhaps in the future, the park could be re-purposed as a filming set for post-apocalyptic films or TV series.

2. The Carnivall Waterpark Kedah

Kedah’s Carnivall Waterpark has been left unattended and unkept since 2020 or 2021 due to the Covid-19 lockdown. The 16-ride park used to be part of the Cinta Sayang Resort and apparently, unlike most establishments, there was no official announcement regarding The Carnivall Waterpark’s closure.

3. Borneo Samariang Waterpark

Borneo Samariang Waterpark was actually the first-ever waterpark in Sarawak that was opened back in 2018 and by default, this also meant that it was the state’s biggest waterpark. According to the official Facebook page, it was said that the park would only be temporarily closed following the Covid-19 impact in 2020 but it has remained inoperative to this day.

4. Safari Lagoon

Safari Lagoon, the oldest and only abandoned attraction on this list that was closed long before the Covid-19 pandemic. It was the first rooftop waterpark in Malaysia, located at the Pandan Safari Shopping Complex. However, a tragic incident led to the park’s closure and it was later discovered that the park had been operating illegally without a license. Both Safari Lagoon and the shopping complex beneath it have since been left to deteriorate.

5. Agacia Town

This doesn’t really count as a theme park nor is it completely abandoned but it is now considered a ghost town. Agacia Town was dubbed as Malaysia’s Disney-themed town due to its vibrant coloured buildings that are reminiscent of Disneyland. It was also once home to several Disney-themed shops with Nasi Lemak Disney and Maleficent Fruits & Dessert being the more notable ones. According to locals, there are a few eateries still operating on specific days at specific hours. Since it’s not completely run down, there is actually still a chance for this town to return to its glory days.
