Recently, there have been reports that a live-action “Tangled” film is in the works. Based on previous live-action adaptations of iconic Disney films, it’s likely that some changes will be made to the plot and characters to offer a fresh take on the story. The reaction to the news has been mixed, with some expressing discontent over studios making remakes of beloved animations instead of producing something original.
Those who were excited obviously shared their fan casts of who should play certain characters, particularly Mother Gothel, who has earned her spot as one of Disney’s most iconic villains since the film’s release in 2010. For this list, we’ll be sharing our personal choices on who we believe would be perfect or at least considered for the role.
1. Kathryn Hahn
Following the tremendous success of “Agatha All Along”, fans have been urging Kathryn Hahn to audition for the role of Mother Gothel. The first-time Golden Globe nominee also recently somewhat expressed her interest in playing the character saying, “I mean, I’m really good at karaoke but singing next to Patti Lupone really humbles you.” We can see the vision since her Marvel character Agatha shares some similarities to Gothel so we’d love to see her take on the Disney villain.
2. Donna Murphy
Who better to play Mother Gothel than the voice actress herself? Not only does Donna Murphy have the vocal range to sing the songs, but her decades of experience in stage acting would give her an advantage in perfectly capturing the character’s dramaticism. If you don’t believe that she could play the live-action version of the character, we dare you to watch the video above and tell us that she’s not a perfect fit.
3. Helena Bonham Carter
She’s known for playing iconic unhinged characters in the past, such as Bellatrix Lestrange from “Harry Potter” and Mrs. Lovett from “Sweeney Todd”. So, it wouldn’t be surprising if Helena Bonham Carter was considered for the role of Mother Gothel. Since we know she can sing as well, it wouldn’t be much of a stretch for her to showcase her vocal range once more in another musical.
4. Eva Green
Unlike the other actresses on this list, Eva Green has yet to showcase her singing chops, but that doesn’t mean she can’t play the dramatic Disney character. Like Helena Bonham Carter, the French actress has portrayed various roles considered peculiar or eccentric, proving she can take on someone as iconic as Mother Gothel in a live-action adaptation. As for her singing, they could always have her lip-sync to another singer’s voice in the film.
5. Cher
This icon definitely looks the part. With an Oscar, Grammy, and Emmy Award under her belt, she could easily portray the Disney villain. Although one might argue that her singing voice may not be suitable for the role, given that she’s an alto, a dramatic yet appropriate key change in the music wouldn’t be an issue, as long as it’s done well. Plus, her accidental cosplay from 2 years ago (as seen in the photo above) really convinced us that she could play the part.
