Now’s the perfect time to press play on a good movie and ease into the festive mood. After the cleaning, cooking and last-minute preparations, there’s nothing better than unwinding and spending quality time with your loved ones.

Whether you’re in the mood for lighthearted laughs, a little suspense or something more heartwarming, these local films make great picks for a cosy pre-Raya movie night. Here are five Malaysian titles to add to your watchlist.

1. Anak Bulan

YouTube video

When an unexpected sighting of the crescent moon moves Hari Raya celebrations forward by a day, one family is thrown into total chaos as they scramble to prepare at the last minute. What follows is a relatable and humorous look at the stress, warmth and togetherness that often come with festive preparations. Starring Mastura Ahmad, Roslan Kemat and Nahidah M. Din, the film captures the frantic yet heartwarming essence of Raya eve.

2. Sumpahan Malam Raya

YouTube video

Blending festive timing with eerie thrills, this story follows a couple fleeing ruthless gangsters who end up managing a mysterious old hotel on Pulau Carey. Their fresh start quickly turns sinister when guests begin turning up dead under unexplained circumstances. With a mix of dark humour and supernatural tension, the film offers a spooky alternative to the usual Raya viewing.

3. I Know What You Did Last Raya

YouTube video

Set on the eve of Raya, the film follows five friends who accidentally hit an elderly man with a goat and attempt to hide what happened. Their decision quickly spirals into a tense and haunting chain of events as guilt and fear begin to consume them. Mixing dark humour with suspense, it’s an unconventional but memorable festive watch.

4. Raya Tak Jadi

What starts as a simple journey home during Ramadan takes a dramatic turn when two siblings encounter a mysterious passenger hiding in the back of their taxi. They soon find themselves caught in a dangerous kidnapping plot that threatens to derail their plans to celebrate Raya with their family. The film delivers tension while highlighting the importance of home and safety during the festive season.

5. Kongsi Raya

YouTube video

In this feel-good romance, a talented chef and a food TV show producer find love through their shared passion for cooking. However, their relationship is put to the test when their feuding fathers turn their rivalry into a dramatic cook-off challenge. Starring Wilson Lee, Qasrina Karim and Harith Iskander, the film blends romance, family dynamics and mouth-watering food.
