Finding a place to call your home can be tricky once you reach adulthood. With the rising cost of property, most people are only able to rent a space with their monthly salary. If you can’t afford to buy yourself a house, you might be renting for the rest of your life.

Although there are not many, some prefer to build their forever home from the ground up after purchasing a land. It’s also actually pretty normal for people to live in shops or live upstairs of their establishments. But can you imagine living inside a mall? Although that seems quite impossible, this man and his friends managed to do just that.

From 2003 to 2007, a man who goes by the name Michael Townsend had apparently been living inside Providence Place Mall in Rhode Islands for 4 years without being noticed. How exactly did he do it? Surprisingly, by pure luck of not ever getting caught. The local artist and his friends decided to live in the mall as part of their “Trummerkind Project” after being kicked out of their previous residential building by the same developers of that very mall.

In order to stay undetected, the group needed a space inside the mall that was completely out of sight, and luckily for them, Michael remembered seeing a small unusual empty space underneath the mall when it was first erected in 2003. The unoccupied space was the perfect spot for them to carry out their project. The group initially only planned to stay inside the mall for about a week but plans changed after hearing an advertisement of what it would be like to live inside a mall.

The group of artists managed to turn the empty space into a fully furnished apartment unit equipped with a door and walls to hide the space from outsiders and even had a Playstation 2 for entertainment. For 4 years, they managed to stay hidden and enjoy life living inside their stealthy unit, but the mall security eventually noticed something was amiss. Guards, who were appointed to stalk Michael, found the secret living space and detained him for trespassing.

You’d think that after 4 years of living inside a private property would get you into a lot of (expensive) trouble but during the court session, the group leader only received a slap on the wrist; a minor misdemeanor for trespassing, and banned from entering the mall indefinitely.

We’re not going to lie, living inside a mall for 4 years undetected is very, very impressive. Not many people could pull it off. If you want to know the full detailed story of how they managed to do this project, watch this video below:
