In a move that’s sure to make all Malaysians puff with pride, US-based Malaysian producer Rachel Tan has just dropped her latest film, “Sight,” onto more than 2,000 screens across the United States. Since its Memorial Day weekend debut on 24th May, this cinematic gem has raked in over USD 7 million.
Starring the ever-talented Oscar nominee Greg Kinnear from “Little Miss Sunshine” and Terry Chen from “House of Cards”, “Sight” is an inspiring true story about Dr. Ming Wang. This world-renowned eye surgeon’s journey from adversity to medical pioneer is not only heartwarming but also visually stunning, earning critical acclaim left, right, and centre.
However, let’s not forget the mastermind behind this masterpiece. Rachel Tan, former Miss Malaysia and the first Malaysian to ever clinch an international pageant title (TVB’s prestigious Miss Chinese International competition), has once again proved her mettle in Hollywood. Since co-founding Kingstreet Pictures with her husband Dan Mark in 2016, Rachel has released five films that shine a spotlight on Asian stories and talents.
The former beauty pageant winner’s personal touch and deep understanding of cultural nuances have significantly enriched “Sight.” As she said in a press release, “This film is not just a testament to Dr. Ming Wang’s extraordinary life but also a celebration of perseverance, love, hope, and reconciliation. As a Malaysian, I am proud to bring Asian stories and talents to Hollywood, bridging cultures and showcasing the diversity that enriches the film industry.”
The Malaysian film director also revealed that her and her husband are already working on their sixth film, a romantic comedy titled “Worth The Wait,” based on their own love story. Partially shot in Kuala Lumpur, this film stars Lana Condor and Ross Butler (who were here last year), plus a stellar cast of Asian talents. The film is directed by Golden Horse Award-winning director Tom Lin, making his American directorial debut.
