Food Review: We Felt The Feels While Feasting On Sheraton PJ Hotel’s Sajian Warisan!

Ramadan is a time that offers Malaysians who observe the Muslim holy month an exceptional opportunity to rekindle relationships with loved ones – and one way that is done is through food. Sheraton Hotel Petaling Jaya understands this all too well – and invites guests this Ramadan to strengthen bonds through its scrumptious spread of time-honoured Malay delicacies offered as part of a thematic buffet, Sajian Warisan.

Laced with nostalgic flavours, Sajian Warisan promises a diverse variety of Malay cuisine curated by Sous Chef Firdaus. You can relish a selection of his heirloom recipes which include Gulai Daging, Nangka Ala Canggung, Ayam Masak Lemak Rebung Tok Mizi, Nasi Dalcha and Ayam Bawang. We were invited to preview this amazing Ramadan buffet at the Feast, and here’s what we think:

Sheraton PJ

We started off with ayam masak merah and gulai daging. For those who aren’t familiar with traditional Malay dishes, ayam masak merah is chicken chunks cooked in sambal. Since it is typically a dish prepared at home, there are numerous recipe variants. This dish goes nicely with white rice and even the nasi dalcha due to its mildly spicy and sweet flavour profile. The gulai daging, on the other hand, has a similar profile to the ayam masak merah – the only difference is the meat used and the colour of the curry. Both meats offered by Sajian Warisan were tender and flavourful.

What’s a Ramadan feast without satay? Sheraton PJ offers two types of satay (chicken and beef) served with peanut sauce. Both satays were flavourful, but the chicken satay was more tender. As for the sauce, it was sweet, slightly spicy and had lots of peanut chunks, making it a crunchy meal. They even had assorted lemang – and the one that caught our attention was the Lemang Pulut Hitam (black glutinous rice).

Next up was the Whole-Roasted Ouzi Lamb served with Arabic Rice, Vegetable Saloona and Garlic Yogurt. This dish had an amazing aroma that made us drool. Perfectly cooked, the lamb was so tender that you could easily remove it from the bone. The garlic yogurt had a pretty interesting flavour, too. Generally, yogurts have a blunt taste. Adding garlic to this yogurt definitely elevated the flavour of the entire dish.

What makes this meal a standout and must-try is the buffet concept. Normally, most hotels focus on Malay dishes during the Ramadan month. But Sheraton PJ does it differently. The fact that this buffet features various cuisines in addition to Malay is what surprised us the most. You can find a mixture of Indian, Chinese, and even Japanese food as you travel away from the wok station and towards the back of the buffet. Isn’t that amazing? There is a variety of sushi for sushi enthusiasts to enjoy. There is rice, various naan, tandoori chicken, fish curry, raita, and a variety of pickles for Indian food lovers. It’s a very muhibbah concept and we absolutely loved it.

Last but not least, desserts – and there was so much to choose from at Sheraton PJ! There were more than ten distinct varieties of Malaysian sweets and cookies, kuih muih, cakes, ice kacang and more. They even have a live-station for apam balik and banana fritters. Besides local delights, they have other sweet treats like chocolate fountain, ice cream and cookies too.

To end a scrumptious meal, you can enjoy freshly-cut fruits, rojak and refreshing drinks such as Sirap Bandung and frothy Teh Tarik. Overall, we had a terrific time dining at the Feast. The food was great, the ambience was beautiful, and we had a lot of food options to choose from.
