You’ve probably attended a buffet at least once in your life. If not, you’ve probably seen or heard of it. To most people, a buffet is food haven. Usually offering a wide spread of delicacies with (almost) unlimited refills, there’s not much to hate about a buffet!

Unfortunately, it does have one major problem. There’s so much food that it’s a wonder if people can actually finish it all. Recently, a TikToker called hotel customers out for wasting their food after a buffet. However, netizens retaliated by claiming businesses were at fault for not allowing them to pack food home.

Ramadan buffets are currently the rage as it allows families to enjoy good food without having to worry about the cooking and cleaning up. In other words, it’s a convenient alternative to a meal. Yet, this TikToker highlighted a rather distressing aftermath of a buffet. In their video, the TikToker went from table to table, showing multiple plates with food left on them. Some had obviously been eaten while others had food left untouched.

“What’s wrong with you people?” the TikToker asked. “(Are you) unwilling (or) unable to take a bite?” He also could be heard scorning food-wasters in the video. “Once you’re done eating, (you) just leave it like that?” he asked skeptically. “Food everywhere, unfinished…” He was clearly disgusted with the buffet customers’ eating habits.

However, netizens had their own take on the issue. Some claimed they did so because the food wasn’t delicious. Others were of the opinion that they had already paid for it so it was fine to do as they wished. Yet, the main argument was that hotels wouldn’t let them take food home. “It’s the same with hotels,” one comment pointed out. “If there’s extra food which hasn’t been finished, (they will) throw it out, won’t even pack it for their own staff.”

There were netizens who felt nothing was stopping them from doing it on their own. “Bring (your own) tupperware. (If you) can’t finish, bring it home and continue eating for sahur (pre-dawn meal),” one user suggested. “My mom taught me that.” Others opined that the hotel should prepare containers for them to bring the food back instead.

Well, one thing is for sure, buffets are potentially huge culprits for food wastage. It’s fine to enjoy good food, but if you can, try to eat responsibly!
