James Foley is the frontrunner to direct the sequel of “Fifty Shades Of Grey”.
It looks like Universal has closed in on finding a director for the second instalment of the “Fifty Shades of Grey” franchise. While no offer has been deliveries, Variety reports that James Foley (of “Hannibal” TV show fame) is the frontrunner to score the “Fifty Shades Darker” job and that an offer should be made shortly for the TV and film helmer.
Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson are said to reprise their roles, while author E.L. James, Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti are producing. E.L. James’ husband Niall Leonardwill pen the script of “Fifty Shades Darker“.
Execs had been meeting with directors over the past few months since announcing the departure of Sam Taylor-Johnson, the director of the first of the trilogy. Production is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2016, with the film set for release on February 17th, 2017, giving Foley time to assess the script and form his strategy.
Casting will get under way once Foley’s deal is worked out, but sources add the process will be straightforward since the leads are already in place.
Foley is also known for directing stylish dramas of the ’80s and ’90s including “After Dark, My Sweet”, “At Close Range”, “Fear” and “Glengarry Glen Ross”. His first film was 1984 romance “Reckless”, which starred Darryl Hannah and Aidan Quinn as lovers from opposite backgrounds.
