As Dua Lipa, the chart-topping pop sensation, prepares to dance the night away in Malaysia with her highly anticipated “Radical Optimism Tour,” so do discussions about ticketing details. Netizens have started drawing comparisons to the ever-popular world of K-pop concerts.

For those well-versed in the electrifying realm of K-pop concerts, it’s no secret that event organisers have often excelled in offering less-than-optimal seats at premium prices, banking on the unwavering dedication of fans to fill every nook and cranny of the arena.

However, we don’t see this with a lot of Western artists’ tours seating plans. Instead, fans get a variety of different seating categories of different prices as the seat map. This allows buyers know where the restricted views are, something many K-pop concerts don’t include in their seat map.

Being a dedicated fan of any artist can be a costly hobby these days, especially when ticket prices for festivals and gigs seem to skyrocket. Take, for example, tickets for IU’s “H.E.R. Tour,” where tickets ranged from RM399 to RM949, with even restricted view seats priced at a staggering RM799. Similarly, Treasure’s “Treasure Relay Tour” prices ranged from RM398 to RM998, with the restricted view seats on sale for RM798. Lastly, the “IVE: Show What I Have Tour” ranged from RM368 to RM988, this time with the restricted view seats costing RM668.

Now, compare this with Dua Lipa’s “Radical Optimism Tour,” where ticket prices range from RM298 to RM1098, with the cheapest seats ironically being the restricted view ones. The same pattern emerges with Westlife’s “The Wild Dreams Tour,” where restricted view seats are the most affordable, ranging from RM294 to RM884. That’s around a RM500 difference for seats that don’t even offer a good view of the concert.

This situation raises two important questions: will these already high prices continue to increase, or will they remain at their current levels? Additionally, are consumers, ourselves included, partly responsible for perpetuating this trend by continuing to attend these concerts despite the steep prices?

Let’s delve into the reasons behind these bold ticket pricing strategies by the organisers of these K-pop concerts:

Production Value

Both K-pop and Western artist concerts prioritise high production value, including elaborate stage setups, lighting effects, and choreography. However, K-pop concerts often incorporate more complex visual elements, such as synchronised projections and intricate stage designs, prompting organisers to hike ticket prices to cover these costs.

Artist Fees

While both K-pop idols and Western artists command high fees for performances, the dynamics can differ. K-pop idols often come from entertainment agencies that manage their careers comprehensively, which can affect negotiation processes and fee structures differently from those of Western artists, who may have more independent control over their careers.

Demand

The unparalleled popularity of K-pop extends far beyond South Korea, captivating a dedicated global fan base. This widespread enthusiasm translates into sky-high demand for concert tickets, empowering organisers to set premium prices knowing fans will eagerly pay to witness their favourite idols live on stage.

Merchandise

Both K-pop and Western artist concerts offer merchandise as an additional revenue stream. The types of merchandise may differ based on fan preferences and cultural influences, with K-pop concerts often featuring a wide range of collectibles, including posters, photo cards, and concert-exclusive goods like lanyards and signed polaroid pictures.

Scalpers

The unfortunate presence of scalpers worsens the issue, as they exploit the high demand for K-pop concert tickets by purchasing them in bulk and reselling them at inflated prices. This unethical practice artificially inflates the overall cost of attending a concert, particularly for fans unable to secure tickets at face value.

Netizens are expressing outrage over what they see as exorbitant prices for K-pop concerts, with some even considering reporting the event organisers for what they deem illogical pricing. Among the criticisms are complaints about seats with restricted views being priced at over RM500, a cost that many longtime and loyal K-pop fans find unacceptable.

This pricing strategy has prompted even the most dedicated fans to draw a line and voice their discontent. It’s clear that concert ticket pricing, whether it’s for K-pop or Western artists, is a pretty intricate business. From flashy stage productions to fan demand and logistical hurdles, there’s a lot at play.

While ticket prices might keep climbing, driven by our love for the music and the artists, it’s important to keep an eye out for fairness. After all, concerts are about bringing people together through music, and that’s something worth supporting, no matter the cost.
