Losing a loved one can be painful, but time will eventually pass – and there’s a chance that you might find love with someone new. Recently, there were rumours that Daffy Tong (唐鹤德), the boyfriend of the late Hong Kong star Leslie Cheung (张国荣), has a new partner – which some fans aren’t too happy to learn about.
A Hong Kong news outlet recently reported that Daffy, now 65, has been living with a man surnamed Shi for the past six years. The pair allegedly got together in 2018 and was recently spotted while on vacation in Bali. In addition to living with his new alleged partner in the house he once shared with Leslie, Daffy reportedly had children with Shi through surrogacy. Some netizens claimed to have seen the pair with two young children – but others argued that the children were not theirs and belonged to a relative of Shi.
The rumours garnered the attention of many Leslie fans, who were angered by Daffy supposedly seeing someone new. Many criticised him for pretending to remain loyal to the late star yet living with another man in Leslie’s home. This criticism likely stems from the fact that Daffy would continue to post about Leslie, especially on the anniversary of his death. Others also brought up the topic of Leslie’s remains, saying that Daffy shouldn’t hold on to the late singer’s ashes if he has moved on.
On the other hand, some fans defended Daffy, saying that he has the right to date someone new since it’s been over 20 years since Leslie’s passing. However, others argued that the issue isn’t him dating but continuing to use Leslie’s name and wealth. After the singer died, Daffy kept his ashes and inherited all his belongings and an estate rumoured to have been worth RM40 million. He also once famously declared that he would never fall in love with another person in this lifetime. Daffy has since set his Instagram to private following the backlash of his new relationship.
