#F1: 2017 To Mark Malaysia’s Final Grand Prix

If you’ve always been a fan of Formula 1 races, this is your last chance to catch the racing championship in Malaysia.

After this year’s final Grand Prix on 1st October, F1 and the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) will officially stop hosting the event once the agreement expires in 2018. As such, both parties are determined to give the nation’s Grand Prix a fitting finale.

“It’s always sad to say goodbye to a member of the Formula 1 family. Over nearly 2 decades, the Malaysian Formula 1 fans have proven themselves to be some of the sport’s most passionate supporters,” F1’s commercial chief Sean Bratches said in a statement.

The announcement follows word from the Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz late last year when he shared that the Cabinet had decided to end its contract. The decision was made due to poor ticket sales and the costliness of hosting the race.

For almost 2 decades, Malaysia has played host to F1. The great fanfare at Sepang has been been a fixture of the calendar since 1999. Despite the loss of the Malaysian event after 2017, F1’s new owner, Liberty Media, is still looking at expanding the sport.

“We have big plans for bringing our global fan base closer to the sport than ever before, providing an enhanced digital experience and creating new events. We’re looking forward to talking more about these plans as the season progresses,” Bratches added.

He continued, “We will have 21 exciting events to look forward to in the 2018 calendar, with the additions of the French and German races. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Sepang International Circuit for their hospitality and professionalism over the years, and their ongoing commitment to motorsport.”
