The growing popularity of the electronic music scene has shaped the industry into a unique blend of genres and cultures combined into one unified dancefloor. We’ve seen the birth of new disc jockeys ranging from the young to the old, giving the same amount of energy to its music enthusiasts.
Meet DJ Riria, a rising Japanese DJ making waves in the electronic music scene with her signature UK sound mixed with her borderless genre selection into one electrifying set. Making her Malaysia debut with “Cherry Bomb”, the all-female DJ lineup, this April, here are some fun facts about this underground powerhouse:
1. She was part of the Boiler Room tour lineup
Known for her set in the 2024 Boiler Room World Tour: Tokyo, DJ Riria has since gained traction in her popularity for her unique blend of UK sound. She shared the stage with the iconic enigmatic legend, Yousuke Yukimatsu and underground Trance masters, Minna No Kimochi. But this wasn’t her only Boiler set; she debuted in the popular electronic music hub in September 2023, which also gained her a significant fanbase, which grew from there.
2. She started DJing when she was 16
Born in 2001, Riria started her career when she was only 16 years old. Formerly based in Tokyo, she has now expanded her reach to the international stage and is based in London, the primary inspiration for her sound. Watching her set, this rising star plays a number of genres into her mix, such as Baile Funk, Amapiano, Jersey Club, Afrobeat, and UK Funk, to name a few. Additionally, she’s also made appearances for high-end fashion events such as Prada and Ralph Lauren.
3. She’s shared a stage with Shelhiel
Malaysian electronic pop singer, Shelhiel, once shared a stage with Riria at the Margins United: Day & Night Festival in September last year. The event sets out to promote the sights and sounds of the growing East and Southeast Asian music scene, bridging the gap between the two parts of Asia for all music enthusiasts.
