Malaysia may pride itself on being multi-racial. However, this melting pot has its lumps. One common problem is the sheer racism that continues to exist among Malaysian citizens.

This particular issue recently came to light, especially during the latest general election. In fact, it became such a big deal that local artist and 988 radio DJ Danny One (温力铭) apparently decided to speak up about it!

“To say that Malaysian Chinese don’t like Malay leaders is totally absurd and nonsense,” the DJ stated firmly. Although Danny did not state where he had heard the sentiment from, he did explain the topic further. Danny shared that the Malaysian Chinese community had felt happy when Dato’ Seri Anwar became the Prime Minister.

“We even agreed that Rafizi, Azalina, and Fahmi did a good job,” he added. “We (felt) sad when Khairy, Nurul, and Mazlee lost their seats. And we miss Tok Guru Nik Aziz too.” As such, the DJ felt it made “no sense” for Malaysian Chinese to dislike Malay leaders.

“What we want is a capable, strong, and fair leader for all (who is willing to) really work for the people. Nothing more, nothing less.” Danny wrote. “There might be a few bad apples, but they do not represent us. Because we are (Malaysians). We are a family and we are proud of it.”

The DJ had a few last words for anyone still harbouring racist sentiments. “Seriously,” he said. “Stop the racism. It’s so disgusting.” Danny also added the tag #KitaMalaysia to truly embody the Malaysian unity.

Danny’s words may not spark an immediate change among Malaysians. However, like many others, we sincerely hope it gets people thinking. After all, as author Terry Pratchet once penned, water dripping on a stone will eventually change its shape. As such, so will word change the shape of the world, one drop at a time.
