Following news of Hayden’s death, the Greenville County Coroner’s Office in South Carolina released a press release regarding the incident. According to the press release, first responders and emergency medical services responded to a 911 call at a residence in Greenville. Reports say one of the actress’s acquaintances placed the emergency call.
At the scene, they located Hayden, who was unresponsive and in cardiac arrest. Responders initiated resuscitation efforts, but were unsuccessful. The star was officially pronounced dead at the scene at 2.32pm local time. However, Hayden’s official cause and manner of death remain under investigation.
The coroner’s office and the Greenville City Police Department have since initiated a parallel investigation into Hayden’s death, and an autopsy was completed on Monday (17th August 2026). The coroner’s office said they found no signs of trauma that would have contributed to the death, and the police said there were no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.
There are also speculations that Hayden passed away from an overdose. Audio from police dispatchers and responders detailed the crew’s efforts to resuscitate the star after a possible overdose. The actress has previously opened up about her years-long struggle with substance abuse, detailing her experience in her memoir.
As the authorities continue the investigation into Hayden’s death, fans and the entertainment industry continue to pay tribute to the late actress. “Heroes” writer Bryan Fuller praised the star, saying, “Hayden was more than an actress; she was a muse.” He also noted that she was “wise beyond her years and already saddled with so much of a life.”
Actress Viola Davis also penned a touching tribute to Hayden on her Instagram, extending condolences to her family and loved ones. Viola and Hayden both starred in the 2016 film, “Custody”.
