Remember when alien Professor Do Min-Joon captured our hearts back in the 2013 hit K-drama “My Love From The Star”? Well it’s time to put him aside and say hello to Captain Yoo Shi-Jin of “Descendants Of The Sun”!

In Seoul, the drama has already hit the 30% mark in ratings while it has been viewed 1 billion times on iQiyi, a Chinese video streaming site. On top of that, it was reported that despite the huge sum invested into production (approximately US$10 million), the drama has already broken even.

“Descendants of the Sun” is the first K-Drama to be aired simultaneously in both South Korea and China. Unlike typical K-Dramas, the entire series of “Descendants of the Sun” was pre-recorded so that it could be cleared in advance by Chinese censors.

The drama gained so much popularity in China that the Chinese Ministry of Public Security issued a warning on Weibo last weekend:

Watching Korean dramas could be dangerous, and may even lead to legal troubles.

The department then posted some real-life cases of domestic violence, divorce, and plastic surgery, all of which it related to the obsession with K-Dramas.

“Descendants Of The Sun” is a 16-episode romance series, set against military operations in a fictional country and starring actor Song Joong-Ki as Army Captain Yoo Shi-Jin and Song Hye-Kyo as Medical Doctor Kang Mo-Yeon. It airs every Wednesday and Thursday on KBS2.

What are your thoughts about the drama? Do you think it is as dangerous as what the Chinese government says? Let us know in the comment box below 🙂
