They often comment that when parents fight, it’s the kids who suffer. Unsurprisingly, it doesn’t matter what age the child is, it still hurts. After all, no one likes being stuck between a rock and a hard place, or in this case, between your mom and your dad.
Model Denice Lam (林卓錡) has been living a fairly peaceful life since winning the Miss Hong Kong competition this year. However, the same can’t be said of her parents, Hong Kong actor Wilson Lam (林俊贤) and former wife Jasmine. In fact, Denice was reluctantly drawn into their argument recently, much to her frustration!
Earlier this year, Jasmine accused Wilson of being abusive. She also claimed that Wilson had asked her to get an abortion. As such, Wilson has allegedly been working on refuting her claims. There were also reports that Wilson, upon meeting Denice for the first time, got her to take a DNA test. With the whole issue having been made public, it was no surprise that the media took the opportunity to ask Denice about it.
Yesterday (6th November), Denice was attending an event when the media approached her regarding her parents’ spat. The 27-year-old made it clear she wasn’t happy with the argument. “This is a family matter, (but) now, the whole world knows (about) it,” she explained. Denice added that she had no idea why her mom decided to go public with her allegations. “She didn’t tell me (anything) before the interview,” Denice stated.
However, Denice has also made it clear that she does not want to be involved in the issue in any way. “This is (their) problem,” she said. “As (someone younger), you should not intervene.” Still, the model admitted that the fight had affected her initially before she managed to process it. Denice added that she is also unwilling to play the peacemaker between her parents. “I think they aren’t mature enough,” she stated. “Let them (argue), (for) now, it’s better (that I don’t interfere).”
As for her DNA test, Denice confirmed that her father did, in fact, ask her for one. “I wasn’t uncomfortable (with it). (It was) just like a COVID test,” she shared. Denice added that they had it done when she was 15. When asked if the request had hurt her feelings, Denice said it hurt her mother more as it seemed like Wilson doubted Jasmine.
However, Denice claims she doesn’t know if her father is lying about the issue either. “Maybe he’s more forgetful (because) he’s older. I don’t care. If I tell him (things) now, he remembers!” she said. Denice also made it clear that she wouldn’t be surprised if her dad had asked her mom to abort. “I know that many idol groups of that era (shared similar thinking),” she added. “It’s not surprising.”
As for the abuse allegations, Denice stated that her mom had never mentioned it when she was younger. “Since childhood, Mom never mentioned Dad, but I’m not curious about it,” she stated. Denice added that Wilson had never raised her, it was always her mom. However, currently, her feelings towards both parents are about the same. Denice even joked that she’s the one being abused now!
Denice isn’t worried about the drama affecting her relationship with her dad. But, she is concerned it will interfere with her work. “I’m worried that producers and advertisers won’t approach me because of this, but there is nothing I can do,” she said reluctantly. Currently, the model is focused on improving her skills.
While her parents continue the spat, Denice is content to remain on the side-lines. She also added that she doesn’t want them to meet, clearly believing that it wouldn’t turn out well. On our end, we sincerely hope Denice’s parents will be able to resolve their fight soon, if not for themselves then at least for her!
