Dego Ride Malaysia has been making headlines lately. In case you didn’t know, this ride-sharing app is Malaysia’s first motorcycle taxi service.

However, The Star reported that Dego Ride has been deemed illegal because the company has yet to obtain any permit or licence from the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) to offer its services to the public.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai has stated that legal action would be taken if the operator continued with the service. “The Transport Ministry does not agree that Dego Ride be given a licence to ferry passengers using motorcycles,” he said.

“In terms of road safety, this type of service will not help reduce the high number of motorcycle accidents that occur every year. I am asking Dego Ride not to challenge Malaysian laws. We have specific laws, such as Section 23 in the Road Transport Act, which states that motorcycles cannot be used for commercial purposes or to ferry passengers,” Liow added.

Having said that, the founders of Dego Ride will continue operating as there are no legal provision to stop them. Since its debut last November, the motorcycle taxi service has been gaining popularity as a cheap and fast alternative to travel around the city.
