Hollywood has lost another brilliant star. Actor James Van Der Beek, best known for his role as Dawson Leery in the hit teen drama “Dawson’s Creek”, has passed away after succumbing to cancer. He was 48.

Earlier today (Thursday, 12th February 2026 MYT), James’ family announced the actor’s passing through social media. The family reveals that the actor passed away on the morning of 11th February 2026 (Wednesday). In the post, the family also asked for peaceful privacy to grieve over their loss.

James passed away from colorectal cancer, which he had been battling since 2023. The star went public with his diagnosis in November 2024. In the months before his death, James spoke about the financial burden he and his family faced because of his cancer treatment, which led him to auction off some of his “Dawson’s Creek” memorabilia to fund the cost.

Following his death, James’ friends launched a GoFundMe campaign to help support his wife, Kimberly, and their six children, who are “out of funds”. The fundraiser would help support the late actor’s family and maintain some stability amid the loss of their husband and father. Kimberly has also shared the GoFundMe link on her social media.

James developed an interest in acting in middle school. His first acting gig was in an off-Broadway production, followed by roles in the 1995 film “Angus” and 1996’s “I Love You, I Love You Not”. In 1998, he landed the leading role in “Dawson’s Creek”, which catapulted him to stardom.

Fans and fellow actors have shared tributes to the actor online and extended condolences to his family. We also extend our condolences to Kimberly, her children and all of James’ loved ones. May they find strength during this difficult time.
