The hard working employees of mamak stalls and restaurants are constantly being sought after by others. M. Selvan, owner of Restaurant Always Best in Klang had to put up notices in the store to remind customers/employers to stop offering them jobs.

“Dear valued customers, our employees here are trained to serve food and drinks only. Please do not offer them work,” the notice read, “We are facing shortage of workers. Sorry for the inconvenience.”

While dining in his restaurant, some customers had actually approached his foreign workers and presented them with job offers. Employees admitted to having been solicited by employers who ate at the eatery, according to the owner. Earlier this year, the owner had already lost two of his employees. That’s why he decided to put up not one, not two, but FIVE notices throughout his shop.

However, they appear to be working, since Selvan indicated that fewer attempts have been made. Selvan went on to say that he has a tight relationship with his employees in order to keep them from leaving. This is also to guide them because the foreign workers are actually being misinformed by those employers. “They are committing an offence if they join an employer that is different from the one stated in the work permit,” he said.

They are apparently unaware that they are actually prohibited from changing employers at any time, Selvan will continually remind them that it is against the law to work with someone who is not listed on their work permit. He claimed that in order to bribe his staff to join them, the employers would promise larger compensation.
