The first week of 2021 has certainly been a roller coaster ride so far. In back-to-back Covid-19 cases reported in shopping malls, the latest are The Gardens Mall and Berjaya Times Square.

This comes after The Manhattan FISH MARKET in Melawati Mall and The LINC KL’s Ben’s Independent Grocer (B.I.G) temporary closure due to Covid-19.

Late last night (Thursday, 7th January), Din Tai Fung Malaysia released an official statement that a team member from The Gardens Mall- Mid Valley Megamall branch had tested positive for Covid-19. Staff members working at the restaurant have since been asked to immediately quarantine at home.

The management also assured the public that the restaurant has since carried out thorough disinfection as advised by the Ministry of Health’s guidelines. “This happened despite our daily temperature tracking, mask wearing, regular hand sanitizing, social distancing and other preventive measures,” the statement added.

Elsewhere at Berjaya Times Square, HeroMarket confirmed that 2 of their outsourced staffs have tested positive for Covid-19. They last reported to work on Tuesday (5th January). “All staff from this outlet will also be screened for Covid-19. A separate team will be deployed to operate the store,” the management informed.

Other hotspots that were reported this week as per MalaysiaKini include:

4th January:

  • Sunway Geo Residences, Bandar Sunway
  • The Maple, Jalan Ipoh

5th January:

  • Menara Citibank, Jalan Ampang
  • Ben’s Independent Grocer, IPC Mall
  • Al Rajhi Bank Headquarters, Wisma Golden Realty
  • Tesco Extra, Ampang
  • Hero Market, Kampung Baharu Puchong, Batu 14

7th January:

  • Lulu Hypermarket, Off Jalan Munshi Abdullah
  • Malaysiakini Office, Off Jalan Tandang
  • Bar B Restaurant, Bukit Gasing

In addition to The LINC KL, the Ben’s Independent Grocer outlet in Publika had also closed down after one of its staff from the Wine and Spirit department contracted the virus.

“Please be aware we were informed that one of our staff in Publika from the Wine and Spirit department is confirmed Covid-19 positive on January 7, staff identified as close contact will undergo swab test and send for home quarantine. MoH will conduct contact tracing,” the company said in a statement today.
