The debate surrounding AI “talents” continues, with many disagreeing with the promotion and creation of AI-generated content, especially in the creative scene. Recently, a prominent animation, comics and games (ACG) event organiser faced backlash for promoting a Malaysian AI band for their upcoming event.

Yesterday (Wednesday, 10th September 2025), Cos-Mic Asia shared several posts on their social media pages promoting the AI band, The Alice Experiment. The band is produced by LOL Asia and Pixelcrest and conceptualised by music producer Raz Gabriel Sho and Rizal Kamal. The Alice Experiment is described as Asia’s first all-female AI band merging K-pop idol culture, rock/metal energy and cutting-edge AI technology.

In several now-deleted posts, Cos-Mic Asia promoted the band, revealing that the AI project will be performing at their upcoming event, taking place from 12th to 14th September 2025 (Friday to Sunday) at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre. Understandably, this move sparked outrage amongst their followers, who expressed disdain over the ACG event organiser featuring AI-generated music as one of its event highlights.

Following the backlash, Cos-Mic Asia issued an apology for promoting the AI band. In the letter, Ham How, the founder of Cos-Mic, wrote, “The initial intention to feature The Alice Experiment at Cos-Mic was to give a local creator the opportunity to showcase his work and explore new possibilities alongside the many talented artists, cosplayers and performers who make this amazing community.”

However, after receiving hundreds of comments and feedback from the community, the upcoming event announced that it will no longer feature The Alice Experiment. The band was supposed to perform on 13th September 2025 (Saturday). Ham How said in the apology, “We (Cos-Mic) respect both innovation and tradition, but our priority will always be to honour the values of our community”.

A quick look at the event schedule reveals that The Alice Experiment had one scheduled performance. Nevertheless, we understand why ACG fans were against the promotion of AI-generated content. Let’s hope more local ACG event organisers will take note of this issue for their future programmes.
