In Malaysia, it’s typical for shopping malls to go all out with their festive decorations – and we’ve seen many local malls go above and beyond for this year’s Chinese New Year festivities. However, what does the decor in malls in China look like?

Recently, Chinese netizens have shared photos of their neighbourhood malls that have decorated their spaces to celebrate Chinese New Year. As this year is the Year of the Snake, most of these malls included the animal in their decorations. Unfortunately, some malls missed the mark, and their snake decor looked less auspicious and more suspicious. Some netizens said these decorations are even more frightening at night.

One snake decor that many netizens agreed was the “unexpectedly ugliest” is in a mall in Yunnan. Many said the snake looks cute at first glance, but the eye shape and long tongue can make one uncomfortable, especially at night. Another snake decor that went viral on social media was from a mall in Guangzhou. The rather comical golden snake has hearts for eyes and a heart-shaped tongue, but many said the tongue makes it look like a drooling dog.

Unfortunately, some malls went the opposite direction when crafting their snake decorations. Instead of making it cute or accidentally making it comical, some malls made their snake too scary. One mall in Qingdao put up a giant white snake that looked quite realistic, especially with its beady red eyes. Netizens even said such snake decor would surely scare customers with a phobia of snakes.

Of course, malls aren’t the only place you can go to find snake decorations. Some netizens have shared photos of the snake mascots they found at festivals, like the snake-bodied Chinese female warrior at the Yinchuan Lantern Festival. While many said the sceptre and cloak give off an epic feel, the bikini top covering the snake’s “well-endowed” chest makes it a little harder to comprehend.

On the contrary, some malls have received praise for their adorable snake decor, but some argue they lack creativity. What are your thoughts on these snake decor? Would you be interested in visiting these malls for their snakes?
