Chris Brown finally opened up about his abusive relationship with his ex-girlfriend Rihanna.
In his new documentary, titled “Chris Brown: Welcome To My Life”, the R&B star talked about how he fell in love with the “Wild Thoughts” songstress when they were teenagers and recalled the night he assaulted her.
He revealed that he first met the Barbadian singer at a 2004 show in New York City and the pair got serious quickly. However, things went south after Brown told Rihanna about a woman he had slept with prior to their relationship – a claim he had previously denied.
“My trust totally was lost with her, she hated me after that. I tried everything, she didn’t care. She just didn’t trust me after that. From there, it just went downhill because there were too many verbal fights, physical fights as well. Mutual sides. It is the first time I get to say anything. We would fight each other. She would hit me, I would hit her and it never was OK,” he explained.
“There was always a point where we’d talk about it like, ‘What the f— are we doing?” he said. “Like, ‘I don’t like you slapping me.’ If I go on stage I got a scratch on my face and I gotta explain it like, ‘Oh, no I fell.’ If you got a scar or a bruise you gotta put makeup on. I’m not ever trying to put my hands on any female. I felt like a f—ing monster.”
So what led to Brown’s infamous assault? Apparently, it has something to do with the woman he had previously been sexually involved with. At the pre-Grammys Clive Davis party, the woman approached the couple and Rihanna started crying.
“The ceremony was about to start, she’s just crying,” he said, adding that he insisted he didn’t know the woman would be at the event. “She got over it. She started drinking a little bit, we both was drinking a little bit. We was tipsy, laughing and then we left.”
But things didn’t stop there.
After the event, Rihanna, who was in the car with Brown, saw a text message from the woman, which led her to believe that Brown knew she would be there. He continued, “I remember she tried to kick me, but then I really hit her, with a closed fist, I punched her. I busted her lip,. When I saw it, I was in shock. I was like, ‘F—k’ why the hell did I hit her? From there she just spit in my face, spit blood in my face and it enraged me even more.”
In order to resolve the fight, the singer said that he pulled over the car but Rihanna took the car keys and fake threw it out of the window. He shared, “I get out the car and I’m looking for the keys and somebody yelled and she yells out her door, ‘Help, he’s trying to kill me.'”
Brown, who turned himself in to the police, was sentenced to 5 years of probation and 6 months of community service for assaulting Rihanna. The infamous conviction made headlines and a slew of photos were leaked following the incident. The “Loyal” singer then posted an apology video on his official YouTube channel.
In January 2013, the 2 stars rekindled their relationship and even made an appearance at the Grammys together. “He’s not the monster everybody thinks. He’s a good person. He has a fantastic heart. He’s giving and loving. And he’s fun to be around. That’s what I love about him – he always makes me laugh,” RiRi said in an interview. But the former lovebirds called it quits in May 2013.
