Chinese actress Fan Bingbing (范冰冰) is slowly returning to the entertainment industry, taking up new roles and appearances. However, the star never shared about her years-long hiatus before her comeback.
The actress was at the 2025 Berlin International Film Festival when she was asked about her hiatus, particularly the first few months following her scandal. In 2018, Fan Bingbing was involved in a tax evasion scandal, which resulted in her getting blacklisted in Mainland China. She subsequently took a break from acting and returned to the industry through cameo roles before a starring role in the 2023 Hong Kong film, “Green Night”.
After being asked about her hiatus, Fan Bingbing appeared embarrassed. However, she continued to detail her experience, sharing what she did after her scandal. The actress revealed that she mostly stayed at home during the period to work out the issue. She admitted that it was a difficult period for her but said she learned a lot during that time. The actress said the period became a valuable experience for her, assuring that she’s doing better since.
Fan Bingbing’s hiatus after her scandal became the headline for many Chinese news outlets. There were also rampant rumours about her disappearance, with some alleging that she was arrested or had fled the country. News outlets later reported that Fan Bingbing’s punishment for tax evasion was to pay about CN¥883 million (approximately RM539 million) in taxes and penalties. She then also issued a public apology on social media.
The 43-year-old also talked about returning to acting after many years, saying that her hiatus has made things challenging. However, Fan Bingbing said she became more critical of the roles she took on, explaining, “I have always wanted to find a story and a script that can fit my mood and feelings at that time.” The actress does have several projects slated for release, including the Malaysian movie, “Mother Bhumi”.
It must’ve been awkward for Fan Bingbing to hear the question from the journalist, but we have to commend her bravery for answering. We also wish the star all the best for her future career, and we can’t wait to see her upcoming projects.
