Get ready to step inside Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory because Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factor is officially making its way to Malaysia for the very first time.
The Broadway musical will make its Selangor premiere at the Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre from 22nd December 2026 to 10th January 2027, bringing Roald Dahl’s much-loved story to life with music, larger-than-life characters, special effects and plenty of imagination.
Presented by Broadway International Group and Broadway Asia, in association with Sunway South Quay Sdn Bhd, the production arrives in Malaysia following a sold-out run at Shanghai Culture Square in November 2025.
Step Inside Willy Wonka’s Factory
Based on Roald Dahl’s famous novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory follows Charlie Bucket as he finds a golden ticket and enters the mysterious world of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.
Audiences can expect everything that makes Wonka’s world unforgettable from chocolate rivers and nut-sorting squirrels of the mischievous Oompa-Loompas. The production combines colorful visuals, music, and immersive elements to bring the factory to life on stage.
Fans of the classic 1971 film will also recognize songs including “Pure Imagination,” “The Candy Man” and “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket.” These are joined by original music from Grammy and Tony Award winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, known for their work on Hairspray and Mary Poppins Returns.
A Little Broadway Magic Is Coming to Selangor
This production is taking Wonka’s world even further with special effects and holagauze 3D technology, created around advanced magic techniques.
Producers and Broadway International Group and Broadway Asia co-owners Simone Genatt and Marc Routh described the production as a fantasy for audiences everywhere, adding that they are excited to share its themes of imagination and invention with Selangor audiences through a new immersive production created by an all-Broadway creative team.
Renowned Las Vegas magic and illusion designer Tim Clothier has also joined the Broadway team to transform the factory into a place where almost anything can happen on stage.
For Clothier, working on the production is especially fitting because as he puts it, “Willy Wonka is the king of imagination.”
From Broadway to Malaysia
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory first opened on Broadway in 2017, where it ran for more than 300 performances. This was followed by a four-year North American tour through 2022.
The musical has also appeared on London’s West End, where the production received two Olivier Awards.
Its current Global Tour is planned to run for two to three years across Asia, the Middle East and India, with cities including Manila, Hong Kong, Singapore, Beijing, Shanghai, Hainan, Taipei and Seoul among its stops.
The Team Bringing Wonka’s World to Life
The musical features music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, and a book by David Greig, based on Roald Dahl’s novel. Songs from the motion picture are by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley.
The production includes original direction by four-time Tony Award-winning director Jack O’Brien and original choreography by Joshua Bergasse. For the Global Tour, Matt Lenz serves as director, with choreography by Alison Solomon and musical supervision by Nate Patten and Greg Jarrette.
The wider creative team includes Mark Thompson for set and costume design. Christine Peters for tour scenic design, Jeff Sugg for projections, Rory Beaton for lighting, Mile Thacker for Orbital Sound for sound design, Basil Twist for puppet design and Tim Clothier for illusions.
Orchestrations are by Doug Besterman, with musical arrangements by Marc Shaiman and casting by Paul Hardt Casting. Joseph Longthorne serves as General Manager, while Tayn Yeo is Associate Manager for Broadway Asia International.
The production is led by Simone Genatt, Marc Routh, Broadway International Group and Broadway Asia, alongside co-producers HY Culture Company, Doug Meyer Productions, Bergamot Front Row Fund and Willette Klausner. It is presented in special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI) and Broadway Asia Company.
