The Prime Minister, Ministers, as well as Deputy Ministers have agreed to contribute 2 months of their salaries in an effort to help citizens affected by the Covid-19 outbreak, said the Prime Minister’s Office.
In an official statement issued today (Thursday, 26th March), over 32 members of the cabinet and the 38 Deputy Ministers will have their pay automatically cut and channelled straight to the coveted Covid-19 Fund.
The translated statement reads:
“This measure demonstrates the government’s commitment in helping those affected by the pandemic. The Covid-19 fund was launched on March 11 as part of the government’s effort to help the people affected by this virus. Up until yesterday (25th March), the total donation including the government’s grant was RM8,493,103.48.”
According to Malay Mail, a federal minister’s basic salary is approximately RM15k. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister’s monthly basic salaries are around RM23k and RM18k respectively.
Prior to this, the government has announced an initiative to EPF contributors to withdraw their i-Saving deposits in Account 2. Those who are of age 55 years and below are eligible to do so, subject to a maximum of RM500 per month for a period of 12 months effective 1st April 2020.
As at time of writing, Malaysia has recorded 2031 cases of Covid-19 infections, with 23 deaths.
