Budget Tips & Advice: 4 Malaysian Women Share Their Solo Travel Stories

Solo female travel is more than a trend—it’s a movement empowering women to embrace independence, adventure, and self-discovery. Yet, concerns about safety, budgeting, and unfamiliar cultures often hold many back.

In celebration of International Women’s Day, we spoke to four Malaysian solo travellers who shared their experiences—overcoming fear, budgeting wisely, staying safe, and immersing in new cultures—to inspire and guide women ready for their own solo journeys.

Overcoming Fear and Self Doubts

Safety concerns and self-doubt often go hand in hand for solo female travellers. However, with thorough preparation and a strong sense of awareness, these fears can be managed. Hani Ismail, 33 years old, Country Head of a logistics company based in Malaysia, recently completed a 15-day-long journey across South Korea and Japan. She shares how proper planning helps her feel more secure when travelling alone.

“My biggest fear is feeling helpless if something bad happens to me far from home. When travelling alone, you only have yourself to rely on, so being prepared for worst-case scenarios is essential. I always carry a traveller’s first-aid kit, save the embassy’s contact number for emergencies, and consistently update my loved ones on my whereabouts. And as a Muslim, after doing my best, I place my trust in Tawakkal.“

For Farah Hayati, 27 years old, who works in Sales & Marketing, her solo travel journey began unexpectedly when a planned duo trip turned solo after her friend had to cancel. She believes a strong mindset is key to overcoming self-doubt: “You need to have strong, positive self-talk. If you’re not confident and sure of what you’re doing, it’s easy to be doubtful and miss out on truly enjoying the trip.”

Travelling Solo on a Budget Without Compromising Safety

Balancing affordability and safety is one of the biggest solo travel challenges. While previously pursuing her master’s degree in the United Kingdom, Nureina Syafika, 29 years old, a Federal Counsel, seized the opportunity to embark on a solo trip across Europe, visiting Austria, Portugal and Paris. She shares her approach: “The key to achieving both is strict planning. Before any solo trip, I meticulously craft an itinerary, research safe yet budget-friendly accommodations, and always pre-book everything in advance to minimise uncertainties.”

Hani echoes this sentiment, emphasising the importance of thorough research. “Rather than choosing between cost and safety, I take the time to research my destination extensively. I look for hotels highly rated by solo travellers—ones with proper concierge services and strong safety measures in place for all guests—all while staying within my travel budget.“

Immersing in Local Cultures: Making Meaningful Connections

One of the most enriching aspects of solo travel is the opportunity to connect with people from different cultures. For many female solo travellers, these interactions not only enhance the travel experience but also provide a sense of belonging in unfamiliar places.

For Aina Mardhiah, 27 years old, a Fraud Analyst, the spirit of travel has been ingrained in her since childhood. She embarked on her solo journey at just 12 years old with a train ride from Pasir Mas, Kelantan, to Kuala Lumpur. Today, immersing herself in local cultures often means seeking out Muslim communities during her travels.

“One of the most meaningful ways I connect with locals is by visiting Muslim communities and mosques in the countries I explore. During my trip to Taichung, Taiwan, I had the incredible opportunity to meet Taiwanese Muslim reverts who were eager to share their experiences and culture with me. The best part was their warmth and hospitality—they welcomed me like family.”

Nureina shares a simple yet effective approach to forming meaningful connections: “I’ve learned that the best way to connect with locals is to just start a conversation. Whether it’s chatting with a café owner, asking street vendors for recommendations, or befriending hotel staff, small interactions can lead to the most memorable experiences.”

Advice for Aspiring Solo Travellers

For those considering their first solo adventure, seasoned travellers have one key message: take the leap. Aina encourages future solo travellers to believe in themselves: “Trust yourself, plan wisely, and embrace the adventure—you are far more capable than you think.”

For Farah, it’s all about taking action: “If you can’t stop thinking about that trip, just do it. Search for that destination, book that flight—everything starts with action. Overthinking and doubting won’t get you anywhere.” Solo travel is an empowering experience—one that builds confidence, resilience, and a deeper connection to the world. While every journey comes with its challenges, proper planning and the right mindset can turn those obstacles into unforgettable adventures.
