It’s a sad day for the Hong Kong industry as it was announced that veteran pop singer Irene Ryder (黎愛蓮) has passed away. According to her daughter, Anne Leung (梁子文), the public figure passed away on 1st September 2024 (Sunday) at 75.
Anne formally shared the news of Irene’s death through the singer’s official Facebook page. The singer passed away peacefully at the North District Hospital, likely due to old age. Anne kindly asked for support and condolences from family and friends during this difficult time. The post also shared details of the funeral service and the wake, which will be held on 4th October 2024 (Friday) at the Kowloon Funeral Parlour.

The funeral service will follow Catholic traditions, and a requiem mass will be held on 5th October 2024 (Saturday) at the Cape Collinson Catholic Cemetery in Chai Wan. Anne also shared that Irene will be buried at the Cape Collinson Catholic Cemetery. Unfortunately, it’s unmentioned whether fans of the singer are allowed to pay their final respects.
Irene was a Hong Kong-born singer of British and Chinese descent who first gained prominence in the 1960s after winning a singing competition. She was even dubbed “The A-Go-Go Queen of Hong Kong”. She has worked with many talented musicians, including Robert Lee, the younger brother of famed martial artist Bruce Lee, and was also active as an actress. In 1975, she made headlines after she married martial artist and actor Bruce Leung (梁小龍) and had Anne in the same year.
Sadly, Irene had a horrifying accident in 1979 where she was attacked outside of her Tsim Sha Tsui residence. According to reports, the perpetrator threw acid at her, which caused severe facial injuries. The incident led to Irene’s retirement as she underwent 20 reconstructive surgeries, which cost millions of dollars. In 1980, she announced her divorce from Bruce. Irene eventually came out of retirement in the 90s and remained active until the mid-2000s. She also served as a vocal teacher, training many aspiring singers.

Irene’s passing has left many grieving, but her fans will continue to remember her impact on the Hong Kong music scene. We extend our condolences to Anne and Irene’s friends and family. May they find strength during these trying times.
