It’s easy to mess up people’s names, but it’s also a big mistake to do so. And it seems this particular branded coffee shop got one particular customer’s name wrong in the worst way possible.

Bavitra Ramachandran had recently visited a chain store of the coffee shop in Sunway Velocity Mall for a drink. Unfortunately, thanks to a misunderstanding, staff there got her name wrong. Most would have let it slide, had it been a simple mistake. However, it seems they somehow changed her name into an insult.

Apparently, Bavitra had gone to the store with her husband and he had been the one to order them a drink. When ordering the drink, the staff asked for a name and her husband allegedly told them it was “Bavi”.  But, they later discovered that the staff had gotten her name wrong and changed it to “babi (pig)”.

“I’m going to sue you!” Bavitra raged on her Facebook. She tagged the coffee brand in her post, clearly meaning to make her voice heard. “(There is no way) your Malay staff don’t know there is no human name (starting) with babi.”

Netizens had mixed thoughts about the issue. Some thought it was a genuine mistake. “My husband even spelled my name (out for) the staff. B. A. V. I. Still (got it) wrong,” Bavitra shared in a comment. Others however pointed out the staff could have asked again to check if they were unsure.

But, some felt Bavitra had added the B herself. “The B looks different. Was supposed to be Abi. She added it herself. Fake issue,” another firmly stated. A few were also unhappy she had made it into a “racial issue”. “No need to (mention) the Malay staff. Just saying staff is enough,” one comment read. But another pointed out that as “babi” was a Malay word, it was difficult to believe they hadn’t realised spelling someone’s name as “babi” would have no consequences.

Bavitra’s Facebook is privatised, as such strangers are unable to see her posts. But, others have been reposting the photo on her behalf. For now, Bavitra’s next move is unknown. We’re not certain if Bavitra will truly go through with her promise. But, we sincerely hope she will be able to sort things out with the staff.
