Book lovers all over Malaysia may be in tears after this news. Bookstore chain Borders has been a long time supplier to local bookworms. However, in recent years, the number of bookstores has been gradually decreasing. And today (16th June) it was revealed that they will be ceasing operations by the end of this year!

Borders opened its first store at Berjaya Times Square in 2005 before continuing to set up shop in Malaysia. In 2017, they also opened online stores to cater to their customers. But, it seems all that will be coming to an end as Borders will be closing for good by 31st August 2023.

In February 2011, Borders Group Inc filed for bankruptcy and their stores were later liquidated. All outlets in the US had also been closed by September 2011. Despite that, Borders Malaysia continued operating a decade more before the management of Berjaya Books Sdn Bhd operator of Borders announced the closing of the Malaysian stores.

“We are truly grateful for the trust and loyalty you have shown us and we would not have been able to come this far without you,” the management reportedly said. “Although our journey is at an end, our commitment to our customers remains unchanged. We will ensure that you receive the best customer service until the very end.”

According to Free Malaysia Today, the announcement was taken from a notice at Border’s outlet in Bangsar Village 2. Additionally, it should be noted that the outlet at Bangsar Village 2 will close by 31st July. A notice on their website also states that online stores have been closed since 31st May.

It’s certainly sad to hear, especially for those of us who still love holding a physical books in our hands. But fret not, there are still other amazing bookstores in town.
