Benedict Cumberbatch Blurts Out A Juicy Detail Of Upcoming “Avengers 5”!

by Kiran P Ganesan
June 24, 2024

It’s almost a ritual or a right of passage for Marvel and their actors at this point to spoil some details of their upcoming major films. Be it an intentional teaser made into a joke or an actual slip of the tongue, fans love these little gags as they give them a glimpse of what to expect from the upcoming major blockbuster while seeing their favourite superheroes out of their costumes.

The typical mouthpiece for these gags is none other than our beloved Webhead, Tom Holland, who has since been the butt of the joke amongst the cast when it was time to spoil the upcoming film. However, in the lead-up to “Avengers 5,” Holland is nowhere to be found, and the one doing the spoiling is the Doctor Strange actor, Benedict Cumberbatch.

YouTube video

In an interview with Netflix, Cumberbatch looked back on his iconic roles and broke down how he tackled all of them. The most notable of these roles were Sherlock Holmes in the BBC’s Sherlock, Smaug in The Hobbit, and Doctor Strange in the MCU. As he was breaking down his role as the sorcerer supreme, he let slip the idea that a character may be involved in “Avengers 5” to a degree.

“It’s been a pretty lovely relationship with that [Marvel] ever since [being cast],” Cumberbatch said. “I’m very much looking forward to Avengers next year, which is cooking up a storm.” — Benedict Cumberbatch.

If what Cumberbatch mentioned is true, then we are a step closer to the rumoured “more than 60 MCU characters” reprising their respective roles. Which is exciting to see, especially since a lot of character and film arcs have reached their conclusions, while some have received a fresh restart and others are just beginning to bloom.

"K-pop Demon Hunters" Sequel Currently In The Works? What We Know So Far About The Possible Project

Furthermore, if you caught it on your first pass or reread it, Cumberbatch might have also divulged that  “Avengers 5” starts its production cycle as early as next year, despite issues in regards to the film’s casting for the big villain. However, this information should be taken with a grain of salt, as it is possible that he had misspoken. IGN reached out to the actor and even Disney for clarification, but no news has emerged so far.

If Cumberbatch were to reprise the role of the Sorcerer Supreme in “Avengers 5,” this would mark his sixth appearance in the MCU. Though it was the same duration that Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evan worked with the cinematic giant, it seems as though the beloved British actor still isn’t tired of the role just yet.

The upcoming cinematic milestone for the MCU was originally called “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” but it has since been addressed as “Avengers 5” after Marvel cut ties with Kang actor Jonathan Majors. Regardless of these issues, alongside the fact that the studio is still deciding which director to burden with the responsibility of bringing this massive film to life, “Avengers 5” is still slated for release on 1st May, 2025.
