As Malaysians, we should be supportive of our local young talents. Many of them are already making a name for themselves in their own respective fields. Whether it’s music, acting, sports or science, we’re always proud to hear whenever a Malaysian reached a certain milestone.
Just recently, two of our amazing badminton athletes received praise from several gold medallists and we couldn’t agree more about what they said. Today, we have another thing to celebrate as another badminton star managed to rank No. 2 in the world!
Badminton star Lee Zii Jia (李梓嘉) has proven to us that he’s more than capable of becoming Malaysia’s next badminton legend after Dato Lee Chong Wei. Even his fellow athlete Ng Tze Yong (黄智勇) once said that he has a long way to go to reach the 24-year-old’s standards. The 2019 SEA Games men’s singles gold medalist is on his way to achieving that dream as Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed that he now ranks as World No. 2!
According to the BWF website, the Malaysian athlete’s world ranking has increased despite losing the final action against the Chinese player Shi Yuqi (石宇奇) at the Denmark Open title during the weekend. However, his achievement as runner-up at the BWF Super 750 World Tour level competition offered him all the points he needed to rank as No. 2 in the world.
As seen in the screenshots below, the Kedah-born badminton player, who managed to receive 92,528 points in the men’s singles, is just behind Denmark’s Viktor Exelsen and ahead of Anders Antonsen, also from Denmark.
Lee Zii Jia may be the only Malaysian in the men’s singles rank list but he’s not alone as other Malaysian badminton players also managed to receive a ranking in the other categories. Duo teams, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Eei Yi, and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani remained in the no. 4, no. 9, and no. 10 positions in men’s doubles respectively.
In the mixed doubles category, we have Tan Kian Meng-Lai and Pei Jing moving up 1 spot in the no. 9 ranking. Needless to say, we’re proud of our athletes’ achievements. May they continue to succeed and be the best at what they do.
