Argentina has paid tribute to its football icon in spectacular fashion by unveiling what is believed to be the world’s tallest statue of Lionel Messi.
Standing an impressive 26 metres (85 feet) tall, the monument was officially unveiled in the Patagonian city of Cutral Co, celebrating the legendary captain’s enduring legacy as Argentina continues its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign.
A Monument To A Legend

Created by local sculptor Aldo Beroisa, the towering structure weighs approximately 70 tonnes and took around a year to complete. Positioned along National Route 22, one of the main roads into Argentina’s Neuquén province, the monument is expected to become a major tourist attraction for the region.
The statue captures one of Messi’s most iconic moments following Argentina’s historic 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph over France. It depicts the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner kneeling in celebration, pointing towards the sky while wearing the famous Albiceleste jersey, with a replica of the World Cup trophy placed in front of him.
Celebrating A National Hero

The unveiling comes as Messi continues to lead Argentina at the 2026 World Cup, further cementing his status as one of the greatest footballers in history.
Beyond the statue, Messi’s influence can also be seen across Argentina through fan-created murals and public tributes, reflecting the immense pride he continues to inspire throughout the country. One recently completed mural in Buenos Aires, created with contributions from more than 1,300 supporters, has become another symbol of the nation’s admiration for its football captain.
Mixed Reactions Online

While many football fans praised the scale of the tribute, the monument has also generated plenty of discussion on social media.
Some users applauded the ambitious project as a fitting celebration of Messi’s remarkable career, while others debated whether the facial features accurately resembled the football icon. The statue’s celebratory pose also prompted light-hearted reactions online, with some fans sharing humorous comparisons and memes.
Regardless of the differing opinions, the monument stands as another reminder of Messi’s extraordinary impact on Argentine football. As the reigning world champions continue their title defence, the colossal tribute ensures that the captain’s legacy now stretches far beyond the football pitch.
